The problems with Square Enix are much more mundane. There's no secret animosity between the former halves of the company. In particular, a lot of leadership positions wound up getting filled by Square's upper management, most notably the presidency, which was filled by Yoichi Wada, formerly president of Square. While the Square Enix merger had Enix legally acquiring Square, in practice the resulting company wasn't particularly heavily tilted towards Enix. And the likes of Brave Exvius and FF1&4!PSP show they could produce wonderful looking 2D games if they gave these projects to a team that cares. Original FF6, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, etc, are beautiful. There are still lots of talented people at Square Enix, but the corporate MO is a lot more conservative, and there does seem to be this perception that Square's 16-bit games have aged poorly and need to be "remastered"/remade to be palatable to modern audiences. After acquiring Square, they've seemed content to just milk the IPs and coast by on brand recognition for the most part.
In the 90s, they had a fairly friendly relationship with game developers, but they're a large publishing company whose products aren't limited to just games. They're just a publisher the actual development of all their classic titles was done by Sunsoft, Tri-Ace, Quintet et al. Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy OriginĬhrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers EditionĮnix is a big factor in things like this, IMO, but not because they were once Square's "rivals."
